Frequently Asked Questions

What is a running buddy?

A running buddy is someone over the age of 18 who accompanies a GOTR/Heart&Sole participant on race day. It is essential that the running buddy be able to keep up with the child for the entire 5k event, while providing positive encouragement. If the running buddy is assigned by anyone other than the child's guardian, that buddy must submit to a background check. If a running buddy is assigned by the child's guardian, NO background check is required.

Where will I meet my team on race day?

Please follow the team meeting area map of the infield. View map here:

Can someone younger than 18 be a running buddy?

GOTR discourages the use of running buddies younger than the age of 18. The guardian can appoint anyone over the age of 16 to be their child's running buddy, but are doing so at their own risk. We encourage guardians to evaluate the potential running buddy's ability to handle any emergency situation that could arise (twisted ankle, heat illness, gastrointestinal distress, etc.)

Is the 5k timed?

No. If a participant wants to know her time, she or her running buddy should wear a watch. There will be a large race clock at the finish line.

Why is there a fee to participate in the 5k?

To offset the costs of providing a safe, fun, and celebratory event for over 1,200 participants.

Who has to register and how do they do it?

Anyone who is not a girl enrolled in the current program must register and pay for the 5k in order to participate. (Coaches, please see the coach update for instruction regarding 5k registration)

Where should I park?

Please follow the driving directions to determine the recommended parking lot in which to park. Please also drive slowly through the lots as participants and volunteers will be walking through the lots to get to the speedway.

Is the 5k timed?

No. If a participant wants to know her time, she or her running buddy should wear a watch. There will be a large race clock at the finish line.

Are there awards for the fastest runner?

No. We encourage the girls to give their best effort and choose the best pace for themselves, rather than competing with their peers.

Who gets medals and t-shirts?

All finishers will receive a GOTR 5k medal. All girls registered for the current season will receive a t-shirt. All other participants who choose the "with t-shirt" option prior to early registration date deadline will also receive a t-shirt. Late registrations are not guaranteed a t-shirt, but will receive one while supplies last.

Can I bring my dog or pet?

For safety, all furry friends are not allowed on the course or at the event, so please leave all pets at home on 5K day!

This event would not be possible without the help of amazing volunteers who believe in our mission and show up to support our girls. Over 1,000 volunteers are needed to put on our best 5K yet! Whatever your special skills and talents, we have a role for everyone.
